MEMBERS' MAKING THEIR MARK
Kudos! The EAG was well-represented at this year’s Visual Arts Mississauga 30th Annual Juried Exhibition of Fine Art, at the Art Gallery of Mississauga. In addition to the excellent showing, several members also won prizes! Congratulations go to: Kim Lee Kho (First Prize, Fine Art); Brenda Sturino (Second Prize, Sculpture); Chris Proctor (Honourable Mention, Fine Art); Kal Honey (Honourable Mention, Fine Art); and Quan Steele (Honourable Mention, Sculpture). Nancy Cuttle has been selected as the Visual Arts winner for the 2008 Milton Heritage Awards! The award is in recognition of the sculpture of Jasper Martin, founder of Milton, that she created for the Town of Milton’s 150th anniversary celebrations. The sculpture will be on permanent display in the expanded Town Hall. The award will be presented at the Heritage Awards Ceremony on February 24th. Well done Nancy! Quan Steele was awarded a spot in the Burlington Art Centre’s year-long Sculpture Mentorship program. Best wishes for the year Quan! Exhibitions etc. Kim Lee Kho has been busy! Just as the Unexpected show at Gallery in the Garden, Sherway Gardens (with Kal Honey and Robin Hollingdrake, curated by Kathleen Haushalter) winds up on February 24, preparations for On the Edge of Recognition, a group show at the Propeller Centre for Visual Art (984 Queen Street West, Toronto), get into high gear. Featuring Kim’s most ambitious and large-scale piece yet, (8 ft high by 3½ ft wide!), along with work by the rest of Toronto School of Art’s Professional Studio Class, the show will represent many different contemporary art practices. On the Edge of Recognition runs from March 19 to 30. Please join Kim and the other artists at the opening Thursday, March 20 from 6 to 10pm. Following the Propellor Show, Kim and Kal will re-unite in Kal Honey and Kim Lee Kho: Drawn Together, which runs April 24 to May 25 at the Whitney Community Gallery in the Peel Heritage Complex, 9 Wellington St. E., Brampton. An exhibition in which the artists explore a surprising range of mark-making, whether drawn in charcoal, carved into cardboard, created with staples or laid on with white glue, in order to create expressive, textural and whimsical effects. Kim & Kal would love to see you at the opening reception on Wednesday, April 30, from 7 to 9pm, which overlaps the opening for the Peel Juried Show, so you can catch both at once! For more information, contact Kim at kimsart@eye-to-eye.ca. Robin Hollingdrake has a similarly hectic exhibition schedule! You can see Robin’s work in Off the Racks February 23 to March 16 in the AIC Gallery at the Burlington Art Centre. An exhibition of large paintings available through the ArtEtc Gallery Shop & Art Rental. Gala opening Wednesday, February 27, please RSVP to Nancy (905) 632 7796 ext 301. Also March 17–31, Robin will be one half of Hidas and Hollingdrake in the Emily Carr Gallery, at Visual Arts Mississauga’s Springbank Centre. Tuscany: Shapes and Shadows is former EAG member Karen Walker’s upcoming show, March 6 to May 1, at Ristorante Julia in Oakville. The opening reception will take place Saturday, March 3, 2–5pm. It’s never too early to think about summer courses at Haliburton School of the Arts. This June they will again offer a few classes at the OCAD campus in Toronto. Kal Honey will teach Experimental Drawing the week of June 2–6. Investigate tools, methods and process on your way to developing more personal mark-making. Kal will also teach 2-D Design for Fine Art at the Haliburton campus, July 21–25. Improve the composition of your art by learning the principles of design that underpin every successful work of art. Please submit Members’ News to Kathleen Haushalter by email: kathleen.haushalter@gmail.com or via the EAG mail-slot in the office. The next deadline for submissions is Friday July 13, 2007.
