Island Retreat - Respite Between the Waves
acrylic and charcoal
30"H x 36"W
$2100 for sale
Island Retreat – Between the Waves” is an image from the summer, living on the island where it felt like Covid couldn’t reach us. It allowed us a sense of relief before the second wave was upon us.

Sue Archibald
Enclosed
acrylic on canvas
28"H x 30"W
$975 for sale
Enclosed” is a space without windows with only a tiny door to allow the outside in. It speaks to the Provincial stay at home order...the feeling that our freedoms have been shrunken and we are now existing within our own personal spaces.

Winter By The Lake
acrylic
30"H x 24"W

I have enjoyed working on this small series of landscape paintings exploring a muted palette. A peaceful morning by the lake. The beauty of naked trees amidst the silence and stillness of a frozen lake, both bare and strong in one.

In this landscape with rockeries and waterfalls, I amplified the vibrant colours of nature in Autumn. This painting evokes the long walks in Muskoka during the Fall when trees and their burning colours are glorious.

Comes the Rain
watercolour
10"H x 14"W
$180 for sale
In my evolving practice of artistic expression, moving from realism to abstract work, I most often find myself between these poles. I gravitate to expressive colour combinations and a free flowing sense of motion in much of my work, inviting the viewer's emotion and imagination to complete the picture. Painting the natural world that we all love, I want to send the message that it is not enough to love the earth and all its incredible biodiversity. We need to change our relationship from ravagers and destroyers of the earth to become the champions and protectors of our fragile planet on which humanity and all other life depends.

Epilepsy Sea
acrylic

She had seizures when she was a kid
And I was over protective of her that she will not drown in the ocean.
She is adventurous. At the age of 25 she conquered her fears
And she is Sea Sure to glide with the big waves. Safety first. She earned our trust to let go and give her passion a try.

Grief - Harris, Emerald Lake
acrylic on canvas
16"H x 20"W
$1000 for sale
When I view paintings created by the Group of Seven, I let the forms inspire new contexts and I paint what I see. My resulting fantasy landscapes aim to capture universal human experiences. My painting Grief (Harris, Emerald Lake) depicts some of the diverse and personal responses that people experience when losing a loved one.

Swaying Grass
mixed media, ink and pastel on paper
12"H x 16"W
$80 for sale
The fall of 2020 was a time of observation of everything close to home. Mesmerizing to me was the swaying Pampas Grass in my front window. I captured the feeling of movement by mark making with that grass. Blades of grass dipped in ink were applied with a whiplash gesture. Warm colour was used in the foreground, cooler hues in the background to create a feeling of distance.

Bev Funnell
Shagbark Shadows
mixed media, ink and pastels on watercolourpaper
24"H x 18"W
$150 for sale
Shagbark Hickory trees are in both the yard and the parkland behind my home. The texture of the bark, shaggy, and shedding is always a fascination to me. I achieved the texture of the bark by drawing using one of the branches dipped in ink. Cool blues, and warm oranges, enhances the shadows.

Ancient Scrolls
solar etching
5"H x 7"W
not for sale
ANCIENT SCROLLS is a relief print originating from a solar etching image. Often letting play enter the printmaking process produces the most intriguing results that are not predictable. This past year has offered much time to push the limits. I use environmentally friendly inks and materials and have printed this image using a manual printing press.

Bloom Burst
solar etching and relief print
6"H x 15"W

I am intrigued by pattern. As a printmaker who enjoys the process of drawing. etching and then printing by hand or press my work evolves using several techniques. BLOOM BURST combines relief printmaking and solar plate etching which is when the sun rays transfer the image to the metal plate. making it a non- toxic process.

Variations on Blue
collage on canvas
36"H x 60"W
not for sale
This is a monochromatic collage of painted paper on canvas. Torn pieces are layered, edges protrude past the sides of the canvas, bits stand up from the surface. After the wonderful freedom of painting a variety of values on the papers, the brush moving freely making large strokes, comes the challenge of discovering the best way to tear the paper and make use of those brushstrokes.

Abstraction on Blue 1
mixed media
16"H x 12"W
$175 for sale
With a love for abstraction, I want to play with contrasts in rich colours and unexpected form. This piece is one in a diptych. Exploring my materials to create movement and playfulness, I used acrylic paints, graphite, charcoal and pastels, on paper, finished with polymer w/UVLS varnish mounted on board. Inquiries about the other part of the diptych are welcomed.

Floral Dance

24"H x 20"W

Experimenting with materials, shapes and a limited palette, this piece emerged from the flow. Haunting and elegant, I am excited by its creation. It again teaches me to trust the process and discernment as to when it’s enough. Mixed media on paper, mounted on board, polymer varnish w/UVLS.

Learning
collage

There’s no doubt Covid-19 left us all living in tormented times, all of us having to make adjustments in our lives we’ve never had to do before. Thus also an opportunity to explore and develop creative endeavours one normally might not consider. I often found myself being more resourceful with what was on hand and thus embellishing with my own design.

Canal Life
acrylic on canvas
24"H x 30"W
$850 for sale
This painting is an abstracted view of the special character of an Amsterdam canal where people live. I wanted to capture the lines, shapes, perspectives and colours of the structures and of the trees, sky and water, with special attention to shadows and light. Based on a 2017 visit to Holland, where I am originally from.

Renée Makino
Raclette
acrylic on canvas
24"H x 30"W
$850 for sale
Raclette is a cheese dish, most authentic when prepared on a special fire. The warm rustic elements and colours, the cheese, the fire, and the special light and shadows in this traditional specialty restaurant in the French Alps at Christmas 2018, made me want to paint them, in my usual semi-abstract expressionist style.

My regular practice of Figure Drawing was put on hiatus when the Pandemic hit. This January I joined an online Drawing group. Alien Landscape
paper sculpture/acrylic
4"H x 8"W x 3/4"D

On Friday, March 13, 2020, the Pandemic sent the country into lockdown. Imminent plans were left high and dry. No one was sure how to behave, we couldn't see family or friends, and the streets and roads were as empty as my schedule.
Alien Landscape is one of several Pop Up Sculptures created in that weird time and space before we truly understood how our world had changed.

Facing the Dragon
digital - Clip Studio Paint
11"H x 17"W
not for sale
This is where one can find oneself facing the problems of Covid, Racial unrest and economic downturn happening in this time.
Facing the Dragon is a digital painting executed with an iMac, with a Wacom Cintiq display tablet and using the Clip Studio Pro EX application. I used a series of Sumi brushes, on an 11” x 17” size canvas with a texture layer. I have been exploring the features of digital art of late using tools that can replicate traditional materials and the drawing / painting process is similar to traditional but with the ability to undo errant strokes.

From Life
quilt - screen-printed fabric with embroidery
32"H x 24"W
not for sale
This is a quilt containing 12 - 8" blocks. Using transparent inks for silk screen printing of each block, I was able to get colour blending and let the unpredictability of printmaking play out. A 4" white square in each of the 8" block allow the opportunity to add embroidery. The embroidery was placed only in the blue-green blocks to add interests.
This quilt was to go into the 2020 Etobicoke Quilters 'Quilt fever exhibition', but cancelled due to Covid. So here it is in our EAG 2021 Members'
ONLINE JURIED EXHIBITION.

Steve Inspired 1
fibre art: machine embroidery
5"H x 7"W
$175 for sale
This embroidery design I created during Steve Rose's Colour Play 3 workshop. The artist he featured that day
was 'Jason Anderson' who I admired very much. The focus that day was geometry, perspective, focal point and colour harmony.
What can I say? I just love all those things. This is a small design, 5x7, very intimate. The first curve shape draws you into the image, your eyes
peruse different area of the composition. What a great way to relax your mind and dream!

I have always viewed “Art” as a multiplicity of “rabbit holes” which I can enter and explore while trying new materials, mediums and technology. My entries represent two current fascinations, printmaking and collage. Photo Shop and Pro Create are right behind. Collage allows the use of old prints to make new works. Technology can combine them all. What’s next?

I'm in a COVID State of Mind
acrylic and charcoal on canvas
42"H x 36"W
not for sale
Although a self-portrait, this expressionist painting represents what I believe has become our collective state of mind and the pervading ethos after fourteen months of Covid.
We are languishing and lonely - the spirit longing for possibilities but the body stuck on a sea of directionless, repetitious days as we perform meaningless activity enduring what feels like an endless winter.

Away, Apart, Afar — they are all similar moments of being we want to be in, when need to relax, meditate, reconsider or question ourselves. During our journey through life, we are always in the liminal stage, behind, is our past, in front of us is our future when new becomes by fading the old.
