Bogdan Luca is a Romanian-born, Canadian-based artist whose work moves between observed reality and the shifting logic of dreams. Trained first in Romania, he continued his studies at OCAD University and completed his MFA at the University of Toronto. He now teaches at both OCAD University and the Art Gallery of Ontario, guiding emerging artists toward a thoughtful and exploratory studio practice.

Luca has an extensive exhibition history across galleries and artist-run centres, supported by a long-standing, self-directed painting practice. His imagery often reflects on memory, perception, and human nature, shaped in part by his experiences of late-communist Eastern Europe. Figures and environments in his paintings appear both grounded and unstable, inviting viewers to reconsider what they think they’re seeing.

Alongside his studio work, Luca creates murals for a wide range of clients. His recent projects include a major mural commissioned by the University of Toronto.

Painting Between Realism and Abstraction

A workshop  designed for painters who want to loosen up, take creative risks, and discover a more expressive way of working while still staying grounded in the essentials of form. Through a series of short exercises and focused studies, you’ll explore how to push and pull between realism and abstraction—simplifying shapes, exaggerating gesture, amplifying colour, and allowing intuition to guide your decisions. Working from a range of subjects such as landscape, still life, or portrait, you’ll learn practical strategies for balancing structure with spontaneity and for transforming familiar motifs into personal, energized interpretations. Whether you’re looking to break out of overly careful habits or to develop a bolder visual language, this workshop offers a concentrated, supportive space to experiment and grow.

Workshop - April 11 and 12

Saturday and Sunday 10-4
